After the Summer Storm

By Darwina Natasha

Every moment with you is full of happiness. Every moment we go through together will never be forgotten.

Our beginning was lovable and joyful. Laugh together like the world is ours and I thought it would be like that Until the end...

As time goes by, As many seasons passed by, As sunshine and rain say hi and bye, I think...

The more I know you The more I don't.

That summer, We thought that The ray of light Will always shine upon us.

But, the sun does not peek out. Dark, dim, dusky. The summer storm, Arrived.

Now, You're on the left, I'm on the right,

In separate worlds, day and night.

You've moved on, with someone new,

While I'm left here, feeling so blue.

Our memories, Always lingering in my mind. Can't get out. My heart and mind, Were trapped inside.

There's a void in my heart, Dark and empty, like the night sky without stars. Still waiting to see the sunrise chart, To unravel the untold truth that left scars.

Author’s commentary:

My friend said he couldn't find the storm in the poem, so I felt a need to comment on it. Thanks to him, I realised that I need to explain this so that everyone can understand and relate to the emotions of the persona in the poem. The storm in the poem is not particularly noticeable or highlighted because this symbolises the situation in a relationship when they faced misunderstanding or miscommunication.

The details surrounding the "summer storm" were vague; and the transition from verse 6 to stanza 7 happened abruptly, just like when two people have a conflict and stop speaking to one another. A summer storm is a weather pattern which typically brings strong winds, heavy rain, lightning, and thunder. These conditions are usually connected and symbolise a shift from calm to unpleasant since the persona first believed that the sun would always shine upon them, but the summer storm instead occurred. The summer storm indicates a devastating feeling of sudden shift or change in the relationship.

Misunderstanding can happen in all relationships such as friendship, partner and family. People's egos are at their highest while they are going through this phase of life; neither wants to give up or apologise first. Both parties will undergo the same treatment, which is a silent treatment and not confronting each other. Once that happens, the relationship will end just like that, and maybe both people will once again be strangers. This is evident in stanza 7 because both of them were now on different paths. However, from the perspective of the persona, she feels like the only one who is still sad and unwilling to move on, while the other party is happy with others and it seems like the unresolved conflict that occurred had no impact on them.

In the last stanza, the persona feels empty and still waiting and hoping for the time when they both can forgive each other and open up the unresolved problem between them. In short, this poem enables us to observe how someone might feel when a situation like this occurs. The silent treatment is not the answer if you still love that person and want to solve the issue; instead, confront and open up with them. If you are able to communicate with and comprehend one another, your relationship could grow stronger than before.
