The 67 years

 — Written by Mardhiah Husna

It’s been 67 years,

Since we declared independence

from the almighty great empire.

After all the bloody and brutal battles,

We have reached the peak of our freedom,

The end of those dark and horrifying days.

Yet there are people out there,

Who do not even remember,

The chronology of our history,

How it started, how it ended.

There are still some youths,

Who cannot even spell and arrange,

The names of remarkable figures that

sacrifice themselves for our nation.

There are numerous individuals,

Who disrespect the symbol of our freedom,

Keep mocking the symbol of our unity.

“It's just a flag,” they said, laughing.

Still, there are living souls,

Who make fun of them, dead souls,

That died protecting the honour of Tanah Melayu,

That died being the heroes of Tanah Melayu.

Yes, it’s been 67 years,

Since we declared independence

from the almighty great empire.

But truly, at what cost?

What’s the point of declaring independence 67 years ago?

If this is what the fallen heroes got after the bloodshed.

What’s the point of declaring independence 67 years ago?

If its own people end up taking every sacrifice for granted.

Wake up, Malaysians!

Shouldn't we at least remember

Malaysia’s historical chronology?

Even if sometimes we get the facts mixed up.

Shouldn't we at least know

how to spell our heroes' names?

Even if sometimes we switch the names to one another.

Shouldn't we at least pay respect

for the uncountable deaths?

That died for the sake of our country.

These ways,

The 67 years of declaring independence

would be worth it.

At least.
