CHERAS, 30 September 2023: Six men were detained at the Cheras police headquarters on the 27th for being suspects in the abduction of a 26-year-old man on behalf of a ‘gambling kingpin’, five of whom were policemen themselves.

The victim, who was abducted from a restaurant and brought to a police station in Salak Selatan Baru, was then placed in a room with his former boss from an illegal gambling operation. It was reported that there were no police officers there at the time, and the ‘boss’ proceeded to beat the victim up with a stick.

The victim was beaten for 20 minutes, after which he was released, but not before the ‘boss’ confiscated his identity card. The incident apparently happened on the 24th of September. The detained suspects, aged 27 to 42, were remanded for a day but were then released on police bail.

Sources stated that the victim was kidnapped and beaten on accusations that he embezzled money from the operation. However, the police are still investigating official motives.

Cheras district police chief ACP Zam Halim Jamaluddin advised the public against speculating things that could create more confusion than answers. An investigation is underway and was opened under Sections 365, 342, and 323 of the Penal Code, which are for kidnapping, wrongful containment, and voluntarily causing harm, respectively.

ACP Zam added that those who may have useful information regarding this incident can either call the Cheras police hotline at 03-92845050/5051 or the Kuala Lumpur police hotline at 03-21159999, or they can also visit the nearest police stations.***
