KEDAH, 28th November 2023: A thirteen-year-old teenager was arrested by the police yesterday in Sungai Petani, Kedah, for threatening an elderly e-hailing driver with a knife.

Following an alleged dispute about fare payment, the 13-year-old teenager is reported to have attempted to stab a 65-year-old e-hailing driver in the left chest. Malaysian authorities claim that the old driver turned the tables, taking the knife in self-defence and biting the teenager’s hand before the teenager left the Sungai Petani scene.

According to the Kuala Muda District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Zaidy Che Hassan, the incident happened on Monday, 27 November, at 5:43 p.m. It involved a Grab driver who received an order through the Grab app in Lorong Taman Keladi, and it was an order from the 13-year-old teenager.

Once on board, the teenager allegedly asked for an RM50 loan to cover rent for the journey to Bandar Sri Astana. The teenager insisted on being transported to the residence in Bandar Sri Astana to acquire the money when told he would be dumped off if he didn't have it.

When the teenager reached his destination, he insisted on being returned to Taman Keladi. Following that, the youngster finally paid for the transportation.

However, the teenager then tried to steal money from the driver's pocket while the driver was giving him back his change, brandishing a knife. But the driver strongly fought back, grabbing the knife and biting the teenager's hand as retaliation.

The police seized a black-handled knife, measuring 25 cm, that was abandoned at the scene. A camera mounted in the e-hailing car has also captured the incident. According to a police investigation, the teenager who was arrested was the oldest of four siblings. Since the teenager is a minor, further punishment is still in discussion.

“The teenager was arrested at 10 p.m. last night, two hours after the e-hailing driver made a police report at 8 p.m.,” Zaidy added to his report.

Fortunately, the e-hailing driver was not injured in the incident.

All in all, let us be aware, be more careful, and hope that incidents like this will not happen again in the future. ***
