SUMMARY OF NEWS

Putrajaya, 1 May 2026: The Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (MCBA) is making continuous efforts to adopt artificial intelligence and an integrated data system to enhance collaboration among its six core agencies. This initiative aims to reduce divided work cultures and improve coordination across different agencies.

Director-General Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain said that the main objective of the initiative is to establish an efficient, risk-based border management system. The framework aims to achieve a balance between maintaining national safety and ensuring the efficient flow of international trade.

He further mentioned in his statement that the agency’s main challenges lie in integrating different technological systems and standard operating procedures (SOPs) used by the core agencies, which include the Immigration Department, Customs Department, police, Fisheries Department, Health Ministry, and the Malaysian Quarantine and Inspection Services Department (Maqis).

Despite these challenges, implementing data integration allows profiling activities and information sharing to be carried out automatically across the different agencies. This could facilitate the detection of threats at the entry point without interrupting international trade flows.

These initiatives are supported by the Home Ministry under the motto “KDN for AI, AI for KDN.” To support the implementation, 11 frontline officers have been sent abroad, including to the United States, for intensive training. Although the system is still in the coordination phase, it has already shown positive outcomes. MCBA’s early detection unit, utilizing this system, has recorded seizures valued at RM82.1 million in less than a year.

The agency believes that stronger system integration in the future could help address existing gaps and reduce revenue leakages, ultimately strengthening Malaysia’s border sovereignty comprehensively.
