Previously, Downey kicked off the franchise as the titular character Iron Man back in 2008, who then died in Avengers: Endgame (2019) to save the universe. He was one of the original six members of the Avengers. Now, Downey will return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) as the main antagonist Victor Von Doom, known as Doctor Doom in the upcoming Avengers movies.

Additionally, the Russo brothers (Joe and Anthony Russo) will direct the upcoming Avengers movies, newly titled Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars that will be released in 2026 and 2027 respectively to wrap up Phase 6 of the MCU.
