Leading the Way: IIUMSU’s Future Route

By Farah R

Edited by Nur Qistina

The heated days that the IIUMSU Election brought to the university have finally cooled down after weeks. Nonetheless, the struggle for a better university has just begun. A stronger Union is now on the horizon, with the burning spirit of Unionism, forged in the thick of the campaign.

Beyond the contesting candidates’ effort in connecting with the students around the campus, I would like to express my gratitude and honour to the powerhouse team, who had tirelessly poured their best out of the spotlight. What would the campaign even mean without the strenuous efforts from the crews, who have dedicatedly ensured everything ran smoothly and minimised any potential issues throughout the whole process, right?

I would also like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the election strategist for the Vice President 1 seat, the hardworking Sr Aaliyah and her team. The sleepless nights of drawing placards and preparing for the campaign as a whole became part of an unforgettable moment for her. It was even more special when the seed of their efforts bloomed in the fragrant night air of May 7th.

“It is truly unforgettable as I know that each and every one of the machinery members has worked very hard to help Irfan to the seat of Vice President of IIUMSU”

Once the official result was announced, I had the greatest pleasure and opportunity to ask a few questions to the newly elected Vice President 1, Br Irfan. He then shared his prestigious and anticipated vision to navigate the Union.

“I anticipate some changes to the Union such as bringing forth friendly and good vibes with everyone so that as a student leader I can be near to the hearts of others. In a bigger capacity, I  will start stirring the direction of the Union, especially for Gombak Campus with my team.”

In the meantime, he revealed his one true plan to unite every student under the tree shade of unity with hopes of creating a harmonious and functional student ecosystem on the campus so that a vibrant life is possible.

Embracing accountability, Vice President 1, Br Irfan promised to be his own compass as he welcomes navigation support if his route ever diverges from the Union's main mission. This would go parallel with his visions and commitment to foster trust and transparency. Furthermore, Br Irfan envisions an active union energised by student participation. He deeply hopes everyone will contribute their ideas, effort, and expertise in forging the Union.

On the other hand, Sr Aaliyah has also left a wholehearted message to the students, as she wishes to see an increasing participation in elections and Unions.

“I wish to see student leaders being proactive in engaging with the students and becoming role models to those who may be interested in joining the Union.”

“I hope that one day, students will finally be able to look at the Union as a platform to create change. Student unions in Malaysia still have a long way to go, and  IIUM is on the right route.”

Dear elected student leaders, on behalf of the IIUM students, I would like to extend my heartfelt wishes for you to lead the Union. Serve us with your utmost effort, take this chance to prove that you are capable of leading, and keep in mind that the success of your leadership relies on your ability to listen, collaborate, and to empower the fellow students. Supported by your leadership and the united student body, hope soars for a greater route for our Union. May the legacy of the Union be safeguarded by the right hands and energy for eternity. Best of luck!
