Lee Zii Jia Did It Again

by Hidayatul Suhaila

PERAK, 5 August 2023: Once again, Lee Zii Jia proves he is still Malaysia’s No. 1. The world No. 17's thrilling 21-17, 24-26, and 21-19 triumph over Ng Tze Yong in the Australian Open 2023 quarterfinals yesterday has solidified his status as Malaysia's top-ranked men's singles badminton player.

Being the only Malaysian left standing, Kedah Born Zii Jia is scheduled to face China's Weng Hong Yang, who is equally motivated to make a strong impression, especially following a string of disappointing performances recently.

Weng Hong Yang managed to secure a 21-10, 21-16 victory against the tournament's fifth-seeded player, Chou Tien-Chen from Taiwan, in a separate quarterfinal match. Should Zii Jia succeed in outperforming Hong Yang, he stands a good chance of becoming the champion.

As for Tze Yong, despite losing six quarterfinal matches this year, he is still able to walk with pride since he was able to defeat world No. 5, Jonathan Christie. His victory serves as proof that he is headed in the right direction towards becoming one of the finest players in the world.

Coach Tey Seu Bock commended both Zii Jia and Tze Yong for providing an exciting and top-notch battle that delighted the spectators.

"It was a very good match; credit to both players," said Seu Bock.

“The difference between the two was that Zii Jia had the edge in experience and bravery to get crucial points.

"We will continue helping Tze Yong with his game."

Nevertheless, both players, Lee Zii Jia and Ng Tze Yong, have given their best to bring Honour to Malaysia***
