ICHIHARA, CHIBA PREF. 15th November 2024: A 47-year-old man has been arrested by the Chiba Prefecture Police on suspicion of robbery and murdering a hotel worker in Ichihara City.

Investigators reported that the suspect, Atsushi Egawa, a corporate employee residing in the city, was apprehended on Wednesday, the 13th, and confessed to the charges.

Egawa who was an ex-employee is alleged of killing 56-year-old Hitomi Saeki, a hotel employee in Ichihara's Nakatakane district, between approximately 11:50 p.m. on October 31 and 7:25 a.m. the next day, he stole around ¥12,000 in cash from the front desk.

According to investigators, Saeki had been working alone on the night of October 31 and was found collapsed and bleeding by the hotel manager upon arriving for work the next morning. A knife, suspected to be the murder weapon, was recovered at the scene.

An autopsy determined that Saeki's death was likely caused by suffocation from strangulation or hemorrhagic shock due to multiple cuts to the throat and other areas. The case is still underway, with police suspecting that Egawa committed the crime to steal the hotel’s sales proceeds. —TBC
