Do you have a trusted confidant or companion who enriches your life in immeasurable ways? We all need to value our best friends because they support us through both good and bad times by helping us manage stress, give advice, and encourage us to follow our dreams. If so, to commemorate National Best Friend Day, which is celebrated annually on June 8th, here are some examples of dynamic friendships that scream bestie vibes on screen. Perhaps you and your dearest bestie can carve out some time this weekend to indulge in these exemplary depictions of friendship on screen after reading this.

The Science Bros

Tony Stark and Bruce Banner (The Avengers)

“Dr. Banner, your work is unparalleled. And I’m a huge fan of the way you lose control and turn into an enormous green monster.”

“Thanks.”

To begin with, Tony Stark and Bruce Banner are known as the science bros in the first Avengers movie as the two men have one thing in common: a passion for science despite their different personalities with the ‘genius, playboy, billionaire, philanthropist’ Tony while Bruce is the quiet and timid scientist. Nonetheless, the two hit it off and soon became close friends. Even though he is not qualified to be a certified therapist (despite having seven PhDs), Bruce was seen acting as Tony’s therapist in Iron Man 3 when Tony started to suffer from panic attacks and anxiety after becoming Iron Man (albeit not doing a good job). Bruce still lends his ears to his buddy. They also built Ultron together, but that's not something to brag about. Although they did make up for that slight miscalculation by creating Vision, so all is forgiven.

Two Peas in a Pod

Frodo Baggins and Samwise Gamgee (The Lord of the Rings)

They might be small but they are mighty, as Hobbits, Frodo, and Sam (don’t forget about Merry and Pippin too) prove to everyone that they are capable of making a significant impact on their world. Throughout their dangerous quest to destroy the ring, Frodo faces moments of doubt and despair, yet Sam stays by his side as his most loyal companion, providing unwavering support and guidance. Thus, having a loyal and encouraging friend like Samwise Gamgee is essential for overcoming challenges and achieving greatness in our own lives.

The Odd Couple

Bucky Barnes and Sam Wilson (The Falcon and the Winter Soldier)

“How do you know about Gandalf?”

“I read The Hobbit in 1937 when it first came out.”

Their first encounter was not exactly smooth sailing. When someone rips out the steering wheel of the car you just fully paid for, of course it’s not going off to a great start, isn’t it?

Despite their initial dislike of one another, their relationship has developed over time and the animosity between them has turned to just a sprinkle of tension which leads to funny moments. Though they have now become buddies that always have each others’ back. Both Bucky and Sam have a past of grief and trauma, especially Bucky as a brainwashed assassin. Now, they have had to learn to get over and heal as their closest friend, Steve Rogers is gone (to the moon?). It is evident that their blossoming friendship has helped them become better and moved past their trauma.

Sisters before Misters

Bridget Vreeland, Carmen Lowell, Lena Kaligaris and Tibby Rollins (The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants)

“Sometimes it seems like we’re so close we form one single complete person rather than four separate ones.”

Moreover, four high school friends of The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, Bridget, Carmen, Lena, and Tibby, each with unique personalities and lifestyles, navigate the challenges of spending their first summer apart while trying to maintain their bond. To stay connected, they come up with a creative solution - a pair of jeans that mysteriously fits each of them perfectly, despite their varying body shapes. Throughout the movie, we can see their friendship shine as they make the effort to mail the pair of jeans, and ensure the other receives it with a letter as well. In the letter, they confide about their summer and how they navigate family issues, personal crises and boy problems too. It goes to show that distance does not affect their friendship.

The Golden Trio

Harry Potter, Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley (The Harry Potter saga)

"Why is it, when something happens, it's always you three?"

Other than that, The Golden Trio, consisting of Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley, a legendary trio in the Harry Potter series, is another example of besties. Wherever they go, they seem to attract trouble and find themselves in dangerous situations. From rescuing each other from trolls in the bathroom to helping each other navigate through romantic challenges, these three besties always have each others’ backs. Their bond was put to the test during the rise of Voldemort after the death of Dumbledore. To defeat the Dark Lord, they made the difficult decision to skip their final year at Hogwarts and embark on a journey to find and destroy Horcruxes. Hermione even went as far as erasing her parents' memories to protect them from being targeted by Voldemort's followers.

Even though there are a lot more interesting friendship dynamics brought to life on your screens at home, it goes to show that your dynamic with your best friend is unique in its own way and may have similarities with these aforementioned dynamics. But, the main takeaway is that a best friend comes in all sorts of shapes or sizes and we should hold them tight and cherish their presence in our lives as they shape us into who we are as we grow together to another phase of life like being a young adult.

Happy Best Friend Day!
