KUALA LUMPUR, 27 October 2023: The Conference of Rulers has named His Royal Highness Sultan Ibrahim ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar, Sultan of Johor, as Malaysia’s 17th Yang di-Pertuan Agong, effective January 31, 2024.

This is His Royal Highness Sultan Ibrahim’s first time holding the position after his father’s reign and after 34 years. His late father, Sultan Iskandar Sultan Ismail, was Malaysia’s 8th King to ascend the throne between 1984 and 1989.

The Keeper of the Ruler’s Seal, Syed Danial Syed Ahmad, officially issued a statement in his announcement on Friday, October 27, after the nine sultanas met at the Conference of Rulers to cast their votes on who would be the next Yang di-Pertuan Agong for the next five years.

“I hereby inform that the Conference of Rulers, during its 263rd (Special) Meeting, held at the National Palace on Friday, October 27, 2023, has agreed to declare that His Royal Highness Sultan Ibrahim, Sultan of Johor Darul Ta’zim, has been chosen as His Majesty the Yang di-Pertuan Agong XVII for a period of five years commencing January 31, 2024,” the statement said.

The Special Meeting that took place was chaired by His Majesty the Sultan of Terengganu Darul Iman and attended by all His Majesty the Kings except His Majesty the King of Perlis and His Majesty the Sultan of Kelantan.

The announcement of His Royal Highness Sultan Ibrahim as the next king follows the established rules of Malaysia’s monarchy system, whereby there are nine royal households that take turns sitting on the throne for five-year cycles. The system was initially agreed upon in 1957, when Malaya achieved its first independence from British authority.

According to Syed Danial, the meeting also elected Sultan Nazrin Muizzudin Shah, Sultan of Perak, as the Deputy Yang di-Pertuan Agong, whose term will start on the same day as Sultan Ibrahim.

Following the announcement, the title of the current king, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Bilah Shah, Malaysia’s 16th Yang di-Pertuan Agong, who rose to the throne in 2019, ends on January 30, 2024.

His Royal Highness Sultan Ibrahim’s coronation ceremony, which is the act or ritual of crowning a king, will be announced at a later date.***
