Pearly Tan and M Thinaah Make History as First Malaysian Women’s Doubles Pair to Reach Olympic Semi-Finals

PARIS, 4th August, 2024: In a groundbreaking achievement for Malaysian badminton, Pearly Tan and M Thinaah have become the first women’s doubles pair from the country to advance to the semi-finals at the Olympics. The dynamic duo secured their place in Olympic history by defeating South Korea’s Kim So Yeong and Kong Hee Yong in a thrilling quarter-final match at the Olympic Games Paris 2024 in Porte de La Chapelle Arena.


In a match that lasted approximately 39 minutes, Pearly and Thinaah, ranked world No. 12, displayed exceptional skill and composure to overcome the world No. 10 South Korean pair with straight sets of, 21-12, 21-13. This victory marks a significant milestone not only for the athletes but also for Malaysian badminton, as they become the country's first representatives to reach the semi-final stage in the women’s doubles category in the Olympics.

The Malaysian pair dominated the first game, quickly establishing a commanding 7-0 lead within the first four minutes of the match. Their opponents struggled to find their rhythm, allowing Pearly and Thinaah to maintain their momentum and secure the game with a  21-12 in just 16 minutes. In the second game, the South Koreans initially led 2-0, but the Malaysians quickly regained control, turning the score around with their precise shots and powerful smashes. Despite a brief scare when Pearly sought medical treatment for her thigh, the pair remained unfazed, clinching the second game 21-13.


In an Interview with the Badminton World Federation (BWF) after the match, Pearly emphasized the importance of staying calm and enjoying the rallies, recognizing the significance of the match not just for themselves but also for their opponents. Thinaah, echoed her partner’s sentiments, expressing pride in their achievement while maintaining focus on their upcoming semi-final match.


The Malaysian Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, congratulated the pair on a Facebook post, celebrating their historic achievement and offering words of encouragement for their next match. "Alhamdulillah, congratulations to these two outstanding athletes for making history as Malaysia’s first women’s doubles team to advance to the Olympic semi-finals. Remain calm and focused, and may you achieve great success!" he wrote in his post.


The semi-final match promises an exciting encounter as Pearly and Thinaah prepare to face the top-seeded Chinese pair, Chen Qing Chen and Jia Yi Fan, who are ranked world No. 1. The Malaysian duo has previously defeated the Chinese pair in the second round of this year's All-England tournament, adding an extra layer of anticipation to the upcoming showdown.
