Skeletal Remains of a Missing Woman Discovered in a Barbecue Pit

By Zarifah Hossain

HOUSTON, 24 July 2023: The mystery of skeletal remains found in a backyard last July was finally solved by the Houston Police, who identified it as belonging to Miranda Rodriguez, who went missing soon before Hurricane Harvey struck in 2017.

The bones, described as a whole skeleton, were discovered on 12 July 2022 in a built-in BBQ pit in the backyard of a house on Peach Creek Drive in southeast Houston by a worker hired to clean up the yard.

According to investigators, the bones were incinerated, and the identification process took nearly a year before the remains of Miranda Rodriguez, 24, were identified over the weekend by Houston police. The father of Rodriguez was then informed about the finding.

Miranda Rodriguez was reported missing in August 2017, shortly before Hurricane Harvey inundated huge portions of Houston.

Based on the Charley Project, a digital repository of missing person information, Rodriguez was last observed on 25 August 2017 at a hotel near Airport Boulevard and Interstate 45.

Due to The Charley Project, the 24-year-old was supposed to leave for her parents' house to ride out Hurricane Harvey, but she failed to make an appearance and was never heard from again.

Rodriguez's case is still under investigation, according to the police, and the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences has not determined the exact cause or manner of death.***
