A row of clothing racks. Dozens of clothes divided by category. Thousands of possibilities.  With 80s songs playing in the background while you dig through every piece, surrounded by piles of torn and stained clothing hoping to unveil a piece that catches your heart that feels worth taking home. But when you finally find the hidden treasure, all the effort suddenly feels worth it.The rush of adrenaline and excitement makes the entire thrifting experience even more rewarding.

Second-hand shopping or famously known as thrifting is a popular practice to shop for or buy used goods especially at a store that specializes in secondhand merchandise Thrifting especially for clothing has become one of the most mainstream practice among the younger generation particularly among Gen Z due to their exposure to the social media of how thrifting brings many beneficial outcomes not only for its affordability but also helps maintain the sustainability and environmental impact of new production.

For many young people, especially students, thrifting offers a simple way to enjoy fashion without spending too much. With limited budgets, they can find more pieces of clothing at lower prices compared to regular retail stores. Beside its being affordable, thrifting allows younger people an opportunity to express their individuality. Unlike the regular retail stores, thrift shops offer various styles and designs of clothing resulting in it becoming a vintage and one of a kind piece. For younger people, thrifting not only allows them to shop at lower prices but also finding their own true happiness in the sense of fashion.

Aside from its affordability, thrifting helps reduce clothing waste and maintain the sustainability and the environmental impact of new production. Studies show that extending the life of clothing by just nine months can reduce its carbon, water, and waste footprints by 20-30% each. By thrifting rather than purchasing new items, significant energy savings translate into lower overall emissions. Therefore, it is proved that thrifting helps maintain the sustainability and environment.

Despite all these benefits, thrifting also undeniably has its own flaws. Thrifting is a little like fishing. You never know when the fish will take the bait and it takes time and patience to get a good catch just like thrifting where you have to make efforts digging clothes from the rack and pile that are mixed with other types of clothes. Despite all the efforts looking through each piece of clothing, the chance of finding a perfect condition of clothes might be low. Some clothes might have stains and damages that are definitely not worth purchasing.

However, not every thrift shop ends with an affordable “catch”. Some thrift shops have started to mark up their price of certain clothing especially for vintage and branded items. Despite their high prices, the authenticity of the branded item might still be doubtful. Therefore, shoppers need to be careful and learn how to check whether a branded item is authentic before making a purchase.

“Before buying anything, check for counterfeits.”  - CORTIS, A Day in Paris, YouTube

In a nutshell, thrifting is not only about purchasing second-hand goods at a lower price, but also making small changes in our lifestyle. By purchasing second-hand pieces, clothes can be kept from going to waste and bring a new meaningful purpose in someone else’s life. Thrifting also teaches us to become more mindful about our purchases in daily life, whether the items are worth buying or simply unnecessary. In the end, the choice is in our hands to make better decisions to satisfy our needs while also helping to protect the environment.
