Treasuring the Essence of Legal Studies: Honouring AIKOL’s Master Degree Graduate.

By Farah R

“Master's Degree is the beginning of a lonely journey” —

Ahmad Farhan, a Comparative Law Master's graduate.

This was his third convocation ceremony in IIUM, yet it was the first time the whole family attended and celebrated it together. 26th November, marked another apogee day for Ahmad Farhan Rosli, a Comparative Law master's degree graduate. He completed his double degree in Civil and Shari’ah Law in the time of COVID-19, however, with the COVID-19 wave escalating, not allowing all the family members to gather and commemorate his two degree convocation ceremonies previously.

Ahmad Farhan Rosli, a student from Ahmad Ibrahim Kuliyyah of Law has flourishingly completed his Master's Degree in Comparative Law on the second day of the 39th IIUM Convocation Ceremony 2023. This culmination day took place last November 26 in the morning at IIUM Cultural Centre (ICC). Receiving the master’s scroll, Ahmad Farhan Rosli expressed his greatest joy upon seeing his family members right after exiting the hall.

This master scroll marked his third time graduating from the Garden of Knowledge and Virtue after receiving his double degree in Civil and Shari’ah Law last year. Farhan stated that the labour market is very competitive and that was his primary inspiration in furthering his post-graduate studies at IIUM. Besides, he shared how stepping into the portal of a master's degree was the start of a lonely journey to himself. Even so, he kept his perseverance steadfast as he believed that a master’s degree acquired a lot more discipline, especially in doing research.

As Br. Farhan went through his degree and master's journey during the pandemic and the endemic of COVID-19, he felt the loneliness hitting his new leaf on the master journey; by having to attend class virtually and with no presence of a classroom vibe. With limited movement and the need to conduct research, he found himself longing for liberty in finishing the journey he began. Despite the hardships he faced during the beginning of his post-graduate year, he revealed, “I  managed to write 6 articles that should be the contribution to the legal field specifically on conflict of civil-shariah law, constitutional law, the law of the sea and the leadership of women in Islam.”

Br. Farhan sparked his interest in Law School ever since he was in high school. He used to sneak his mom’s Law School graduation certificate and write his name on that certificate when he was a child—that being said, his mom has become his prime aspiration to enroll into Law School. Setting his mom as his role model in chasing his dream in the legal field, Br. Farhan spent 5 years, thriving his sweat and tears in seizing a Civil-Shariah Law degree, as well as a Law master. When asked about his next academic plan, he stated that he is determined to pursue his Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in the same university.

Viewing the series of Br. Farhan's journey in obtaining his master's degree since his foundation year at the Centre for Foundation Studies (CFS) Petaling Jaya has genuinely inspired me as a sophomore and one of his family members to follow in his footsteps. In fact, it was he who encouraged me to apply to IIUM! "For the sake of the family, accept this as a gift and motivation for you," Br. Farhan advised. Seeing a family member achieve academic success has motivated me to work harder in my university years, particularly as one of the Garden of Knowledge and Virtue community.

Indeed, when complemented by dedication and steadfastness, a childhood dream can become possible. I want to congratulate you on finishing your master's program and effectively serving as a precedent for the younger generation. As a final remark, I'd like to wish you the best of luck in your upcoming endeavour!
