At some point in life, we might have been unknowingly trapped in depression and anxiety. While some of us might wander alone in the dark, music would lay its hand to bring us out to the light. ‘Trust Me Mate’ is one of the newly dropped hits that might be the one for you and every single lonely soul out there.
Before we unravel this heartful masterpiece, we shall get to know the ‘painter’. It’s fine if you are unfamiliar with this underrated singer I would say, Dean Lewis. If Leonardo da Vinci is known for his dramatic and expressive artwork, then Dean Lewis is known for his strong vocals and songs that are full of authentic lyrics, providing reflection, and hitting you in the feels.
Born on October 21st, 1987, this Sydney-born singer-songwriter had been active in the music industry since 2016 with his single “Waves”. The biggest hit that he ever released is “Be Alright” which recorded 259M views on YouTube. One of the secrets to his success is that the messages that Dean conveys are relatable towards the listeners who are usually in their 20s until 30s.
I had found out about Dean when I was 17. My personal favorites are “Be Alright”, “Hurtless” and “How Do I Say Goodbye?”. The lyrics were written by himself and had established a great comfort in my deepest heart. Thanks to Dean, all the sorrowness that gathered is now gone with the help of his songs.
Okay, let me start diving deeper into this song. Are you ready?
“Trust Me Mate” was released on September 29th, 2023. The singer-songwriter revealed himself all about the song via Instagram reels. Until this time, Dean had been sharing quite a lot of heartfelt informations.
“To anyone who feels like there is no way out.
And to friends who remind us to stay”

This track was made for people who struggle with their everyday life. The singer himself unveiled that he had been struggling with money and passion in the past. But, with the help of his family; Rhys, Sean, his father and nanny, Dean stays standing strong to pursue his passion. Not to mention, his closest friends who had been his biggest supporters since he was nothing. If you have followed Dean since before, he is really good at appreciating people around. Just like he did for his father with the song, “How Do I Say Goodbye?”.
The persona in this song would be a friend who gives motivations to his/her best mate. If you take a look at the first verse, the lyrics are pointing towards the miserable life a person is living in. I believe that Dean wrote the song this way to give back what his family and friends did to him before, to society. The state of losing the track of life usually happens to a lot of people. I believe that the singer himself wants to lift up mood and confidence in one’s mind to keep on walking through this life.
“But, trust me, mate, you've got this,
You always were the strongest,
But I'm not gonna promise that this won't hurt…”
One of the strong messages in this song lies in the chorus. When we listen to this track, it is as if we are hearing words of encouragement from someone close. Although it seems simple and trifling for some of us, those words give such a big impact towards someone else. As for Dean Lewis himself, his brother; Sean and Rhys had told him a bunch of words to lift his confidence back. As what he told his supporters, the lyrics were inspired by some of the things they told him. The singer is the living proof of how powerful the words can be.
At the end of my writing, I would like to conclude everything. “Trust Me Mate” is a must-song that all empty souls need. It might not be as popular or as viral as others but it can tickle every heart with its authentic value along with beautiful voice and rhythm. As a fan of underrated artists, I hope that you can give Dean Lewis (ig: @deanlewis) a big and warm support until the end.
