UX Writing as a Golden Opportunity for Gen Z Writers

In a fast-paced world, humans interact not only with humans but also with robots on a daily basis. Let’s just imagine a day when humans went through ordinary days involving their lives with technology. Have you ever wondered how humans communicate with it? Every tap, swipe, and click is considered a way of communicating, whether it is through touching the screen or verbally uttering.

All these connections are made through concise words that appear on the screen or are comprehended through human utterances. As humans basically live with technology, this is where user experience (UX) writing comes in, bonding people with technology. UX writing is one of the pivotal components of UX design. Different from traditional copywriting, UX writing is all about crafting microcopy that prioritises users with the goal of helping them to complete their tasks effortlessly with the most convenient method.

For the past few years, there has been a substantial demand for UX writing, making it a continuously high-demanding job. As companies increasingly strive to build user-centric products, the need for UX writers who are skilled in crafting concise, clear, and user-friendly content is equally expanded. Gen Z, who are often considered tech-savvy due to their upbringing in a digitally immersed environment and rapid technological advancements, can view UX writing as a golden opportunity and a promising career path, especially when writing is what they are passionate about!

Basically, UX writing is more than just writing; it’s a way of designing creative communication and easing the user experience between technology and users—between technology and humans.

“UX writing is the practice of creating the text in a user experience. It aims to improve user experience by informing and engaging the user. Examples of UX writing include notifications, titles, buttons, instructions, labels, descriptions, controls and warnings.”

– Interaction Design Foundation

To provide further light on UX, let’s take a simple example. Let’s say we are opening an app—let’s take Instagram for example. When users open the app, they would notice buttons like ‘follow,’ ‘post,’ ‘like,’ or ‘your story.’ Those simple and clear words presented in the interfaces of Instagram are the duty of the UX writer. Hence, the UX writer’s goal is to make sure users can easily know the functions of the button and how the button can navigate them when they tap on the buttons without the need to second-guess it.

For instance, when users click the three dots on a post, a list of options such as ‘Report,’ ‘Unfollow,’ and more would appear. These options are not only short and specific, but they also help users to understand exactly what action they’re about to take. Hence, the key to UX writing here is clarity. Words or call-to-actions (CTAs) will assist the users in making decisions and provide lucid communication when experiencing the app.

So, back to the title of this article, why is Gen Z well-suited as a UX writer? The answer is kind of simple. Gen Z has a lot of experience in exploring various apps such as Instagram, X, Snapchat, TikTok, and more—you name it. As they have spent countless hours on different apps, they might have naturally noticed how different apps serve the users, and I am highly convinced that Gen Z are keen observers to identify what they actually want from the app, mainly when the app is difficult to use. Basically, this generation understands what can be improvised to enhance the user experience from the app they use. As the generation expands, the ones who are handling the technology also need to evolve with the way the generation interacts, who better knows the ins and outs of digital engagement.
