GOMBAK, 13th January 2025: Reflecting on the recent election, two representatives from the IIUM Student Union, Ali Karimi, the president, and Irfan Rosdin, vice president 1, shared their insights on the riverside of the IIUM Gombak campus.
The programme, open-air and accessible to all IIUM students, was held from 4:30 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. and was organised by the Wawasan Club. Interestingly, the main issue discussed is current campus politics at IIUM.
“Certain Kuliyyah have increased in participation[,] and some have lessened,” summarised Br. Irfan in the recent election, conducted on the 19th of December 2024. “The Kuliyyah that we have expected to have high voter turnout ended up being on the lower side, but the Kuliyyah that we expected to be low did quite well, so it’s unpredictable,” he added.
On the positive side, Br. Ali mentioned an increase in student leader participation at IIUM during the recent election. He pointed out that this improvement may be due to the current generation's recovery from Covid-19
Br. Irfan rated the election six out of ten, as there is still room for improvement. He expressed hope to centralise the election process to achieve higher voter turnout in the future. Similarly, Br. Ali emphasised the importance of investigating the reasons behind some students’ disinterest in the IIUM Student Union.
Every student front in IIUM was encouraged to focus on the role of their niche and perform their duties well. For example, a welfare-centric representative must carry out the duties under the position diligently. This strategy could also help attract more students to vote.
Before wrapping up the session, the programme’s moderator, Luqman Amir Effendy, the president of the Wawasan Club, concluded the session memorably by saying that politics is never static; it is dynamic. The change will start from the current generation to bring campus politics in IIUM back to its previous glorious era. — TBC
