“Wherefore Art Thou, Juliet” : A Reimagining of Romeo and Juliet

By Bee Balqis

GOMBAK, 9 July 2023: A reimagining of Romeo and Juliet brought to the Malaysian audience through “Wherefore Art Thou, Juliet?” was held in the Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre (KLPAC) from July 7 to 9, 2023.

The localised Shakespeare’s play is about Romeo, who is trapped in modern-day Malaysia, experiencing a journey of the unexpected. The play entertains the audience with the fusion of Malaysian culture, including props, costumes, and the script, which create an intimate connection between the players and audiences.

Jazman Norazmi, the main writer of the play along with Teshima Sarah, reimagined the play in a Malaysian context intended “to celebrate the diversity and uniqueness of Malaysian culture, hoping that the audience can relate to and be entertained by the play”.

Muhammad Faiz Aiman bin Ahmad Fauzi, one of the directors who also plays Romeo, wants the audience to “focus on Romeo’s character development, journey, and connection to other characters”. He also added, in regards to the unresolved ending, for the audience “to wonder what happened to the characters that helped Romeo throughout his journey.”

Production Practicum is the Final Year Project for graduating students at TUTAS. It is a student-driven production that involves the active participation of seven student directors, casts, dancers, stage managers, and technical track students. Taylor's University, along with Seni Teater Rakyat and KLPAC, provides valuable support to bring this project to success.***
