Whimsical Animated Series ‘Hilda’ : A Mother and Daughter Love

If you are looking for a show that is easily enjoyable, whimsical, filled with fantasy and has a good plot, I recommend you give ‘Hilda’ an animated series a go! It is an animated show adapted from a graphic novel by Luke Pearson. And don’t worry, I did my research and he supports Palestine <3 (can’t be too careful these days)

Hilda is a whimsical and adventurous animated show created by Luke Pearson, portraying a blue-haired young girl of 11 years old named Hilda who’s witty and always ready for an adventure. She lives in a world where magical creatures like trolls, flying wolves, elves, giants, and fairies (not the sparkles and glitter ones though) exist and the humans fairly live in cohabitation with them. It is also filled with various characters with complex yet interesting characterisation. The shows give off the vibe of Gravity Falls but are happier and it goes on until the end (oops).

It explores Hilda's life as she transitions from the countryside life to living in the city, away from the nature and creatures that she used to be with.

Other than the great world-building of the show that really caught my attention, the animated series’ ventures on Hilda and her mother's relationship with one another did too. Hilda’s mother, Johanna, is a single mother, and they live on the city's outskirts by themselves. Their bond with each other is strong and beautiful because Mum understands Hilda's knacks for going outside and playing with magical creatures.

This in itself is already a great start! Rather than having a constricted mother-daughter relationship, Hilda and Johanna are open to each other. Even if Johanna is the authoritative figure for Hilda, she makes sure that it does not restrain Hilda's love for the outside world when no harm is done to her. This shows that Johanna isn’t just a mother in the show, but her own person as her character portrays more than ‘a mother’ and depends on Hilda as well.

Johanna, of course, worries about Hilda’s action but it is rooted in her love for her daughter and she understands that Hilda is a child who makes mistakes that come from good intentions. She scolds, worries, and reprimands Hilda but always ends it by showing unlimited love to her daughter.  She always shows concern for Hilda's emotions and continuously expresses support for Hilda's social life when she moves to the city.

There are even episodes showing that Johanna used to be even more of a troublemaker than Hilda herself and I love the show for that. They do not try to hide the fact that Johanna does not like adventure and make it something that only exists in the past, but rather use it to build her character as an adult. I think it kinda amazes me that a parent figure actually plays a part in the children's adventurous lives rather than being nonexistent.

It is kinda refreshing to see such an honest and open love between mother and daughter who need each other and their person at the same time. There's something about a mother-daughter dynamic that easily brings one to tears and if you love this type of dynamic, I’m sure you will love the show.
