GOMBAK, 23rd October 2024: As the new academic calendar has officially started, many final-year students are now beginning to prepare for their final-year project. The Secretariat of English Language and Literature (ELITS) then took the initiative to conduct a sharing session with BENL’s respected assistant professor, Dr Wan Nur Madiha, for tips and bits of advice.

During the session, Dr Madiha divided her personal tips into two parts. The first part emphasises the importance of managing data, such as using external applications for storage, while the second part addresses managing realistic goals. As a once-thesis student herself, Dr Madiha believes that one of the ways to achieve a realistic goal is to have a Gantt chart and try to write 100 words a day. Seeing progress develop over time is much more important than crafting perfection when writing a final-year project.

She also suggests building a genuine connection with one’s supervisor as another tip to a smooth sailing journey while writing final-year projects. This is where transparent communication can flourish. Having FYP buddies with whom one can share their problems and cry together with will make the experience more tolerable than being isolated.

In a separate interview session with Dr Madiha, she shares a memorable saying that she quoted from her Master's supervisor, Professor Quayum. “Writing a final year project is like being married. You don’t run away when it gets hard, you fix it,” she says.

As the workshop approaches an end, Dr Madiha shares her closing remark by wishing every FYP-taking student the best and hoping they stay driven. —TBC
