GOMBAK, 14 May 2023: ELITS organized a programme called Arabic Calligraphy Workshop with the collaboration of the Khattat Club. The event was attended by 17 students at ADM LT5 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. with the purpose of exposing students to the fading art of Khat.
"We learn how to write Arabic calligraphy beautifully because Allah is beautiful and He loves beauty," said Sister Riham, the translator of today’s program.
The workshop was led by Mr. Abd Rauf Baydoun, father of Dr. Ziyad Baydoun, who was supposed to lead the workshop but was unable to do so due to an unexpected situation.
Mr. Abd Rauf conducted the lesson in Arabic, and his daughter, Sister Riham, who is also a talented calligrapher, helped translate the lesson from Arabic to English.
The participants were provided with handmade Khat pens made from bamboo and were taught how to use them properly to write Khat Riq’ah.
A common misconception in Malaysia is that Khat Nasakh is the main style of Khat, but Mr. Abd Rauf informed the participants that it was Riq’ah instead. According to him, Riq’ah is the main gate that would lead to other styles of Khat, while Nasakh, on the other hand, is the easiest of all the styles.
The participants were first taught how to write all the dots and lines before moving on to individual letters. Sister Riham translated that by breaking the whole art of Khat into parts, it would be easier to learn compared to looking at it as a whole.
The workshop concluded with Sister Lydia Nazurah, the manager of today’s program, giving an appreciation gift to Mr. Abd Rauf for his willingness to conduct today’s workshop.
