SOUTH KOREA, 5th March 2024: Fanwars have erupted throughout K-Pop X between Carats and ARMYs ever since news of Seventeen’s leader, S.Coups, being exempted from the compulsory national military service was released.
On the 1st of March 2024, Naver shared an article about Seventeen’s leader, S.Coups (real name Choi Seungcheol), 29, who has been exempted from the compulsory national military service due to a ligament rupture.
The article, detailing S.Coups’ injuries to his anterior cruciate ligament and anterolateral ligament on his left knee, received mixed responses from K-Pop X. Many ARMYs, the fans of Bangtan Sonyeondan (BTS), expressed outrage at the news, claiming that S.Coups had “paid the military off so (he) wouldn’t have to serve (in the military)” and made many disparaging posts about him, even to the extent of downplaying his injuries.
ARMYs’ responses were not received well by Carats (fans of Seventeen), who tried to remedy the situation by educating ARMYs regarding S.Coups’ condition. However, the situation escalated when ARMYs began doxxing (leaking personal information) Carats, sending unwarranted hate towards Carats and Seventeen, and continued making fun of the situation.
In response, Carats too have begun doxxing ARMYs, which effectively ceased a part of the barrage they received. A number of ARMYs chose to apologise, and other K-Pop fandoms such as EXO-Ls (fans of EXO) and Shinhwa fans have shown their support for Carats ever since. S.Coups, too, had written a post thanking Carats for their continuous support and love.
