KUALA LUMPUR, 19th December 2024: In a viral post on Facebook, the original user, Caroline Lam, shared heartbreaking pictures of the dismembered abdomen of a cat with the press statement of cat abuse at the University Malaya (UM). According to their student union, two consecutive cases of dismembered cats were found on the 12th and 16th of December.

Many students mourn the cat's tragic death. The UM campus is known for being feline-friendly, with adopted stray cats being used as welcomers to new arrival students. This case disrupted the peace and harmony at UM.

Frustrated, some students have also demanded that the university take proactive action against the perpetrator since the responses, including lodging a police report and releasing a public statement, came only from the students.

In response to the police report, PDRM has concluded that the cats were attacked by dogs, which received backlash on social media.

“Where is the CCTV footage of the dog attack?” countered an animal activist, Shima Aris, on her Instagram account. She also demanded a post-mortem of the cat to prove that it was attacked and not brutally killed, because blaming voiceless dogs is not right.

A pool of netizens has expressed their sadness and concern regarding this case on various social media platforms, especially X. They disagreed with PDRM’s conclusion of saying the death was caused by dog attacks, as the wounds are too intentionally disfigured. Hence, collective voices are needed to fight for animal rights so their justice can be served. — TBC
