MALAYSIA, 20th November 2024: Chagee, the renowned milk tea chain in Malaysia has been under fire since 18th November after a video of their employee rigging the “Tear and Win” event went viral online.

The 47-second TikTok video shows the Chagee employee checking and separating cups containing gifts for the event, which has sparked outrage amongst Malaysian netizens. The situation escalated when the messages from the official Chagee Malaysia X account to X user, Naquib, was revealed after they posted the viral video on Twitter.

The X user expressed their disappointment and surprise upon receiving the messages through an X post, which read: “Chagee has replied. [I] will have to delete the video; if not, legal action will be taken against me. That is all.” (“Chagee dah reply. Kena delete video kalau tak, aku akan dikenakan legal action. Sekian.”)

However, the situation took a turn for the worse when Chagee Malaysia’s X account commented on Naquib’s post, stating: “Hi, we’re requesting to delete as it involves one of our staff’s privacy ya. We truly appreciate every feedbacks for us to improve and of course, we do not encourage any of the actions in the video. We also have taken [the] necessary actions to the relevant staff.”

The comment garnered much criticism from Malaysian netizens of X, many of them finding the response to be unprofessional, impolite and irresponsible. However, the controversy reached a boiling point when a now deleted post from another X user, Yash, surfaced, accusing the Chagee Kota Kemunting outlet of refusing to hire Indian staff members.
