GOMBAK, 5 November 2023: Sports Development Centre (SDC) celebrated the success of the IIUM Sports Carnival 2023 (ISC) with a grand closing ceremony on 4 November, 2023, from 8.30 P.M. until 10.30 P.M. The event took place at the IIUM Cultural Centre (ICC).
ISC was a significant sports event held at IIUM from 28 October to 4 November, featuring a wide range of sports, from abstract strategy games like chess to traditional sports like Sepak Takraw. The splendour of the carnival was exemplified by the shows of 17 marching teams, each representing a mahallah, during the closing ceremony.
The ceremony began with a welcoming remark by the Chairman of ISC, who stated, “ISC is [designed] to foster sportsmanship and camaraderie among mahallahs and participants. Through ISC, we have built stronger ties between mahallahs.”
The Deputy Rector of Responsible Research and Innovation, Prof. Dr. Amir Akramin bin Shafie, emphasised, “There’s no winner or losers; every participant is a winner. ISC has demonstrated that together we are stronger, and together we can achieve the impossible.”
Both speakers stressed the significance of sports in life, noting that "like in life, the value [of sports] is in the journey.” The value of sports could be derived from the physical, mental, and emotional benefits it brings, as well as the bonds students can strengthen through sports.
The ceremony featured performances by the IIUM Silat Mustangs and IIUM Acoustic Band and culminated with the eagerly awaited announcement of the ISC overall winners: Mahallah Salahuddin in the female category and Mahallah Zubair in the male category.
Mahallah Salahuddin also ranked in the top two in the marching competition, and their performance demonstrated their strength and vigour.
It's not surprising that Mahallah Zubair won—their enthusiasm and passion were evident as they were also the overall winner of the previous IIUM event, Inter-Mahallah Cultural Week 2023.
ISC officially concluded with a photography session involving the audience and guests. It acknowledged and expressed gratitude to the committees and participants whose contributions led to the success of the event. The next IIUM Sports Carnival event organised by IIUM will be held in two years as it is a biennial event. ***
