DELL and ELITS Hosted an International Colloquium with Universitas Muhammadiyah Purwokerto for Students’ Research Exchange

GOMBAK, 8th March 2024: The Department of English Language and Literature (DELL) and the Secretariat of English Language and Literature (ELITS) have collaborated with Fakultas Ilmu Budaya dan Komunikasi, Universitas Muhammadiyah Purwokerto, to provide a platform for students to present and exchange their research.


The three-hour programme held in Seminar Room 1 of the Human Sciences building consisted of 16 local and international English major students from IIUM and Universitas Muhammadiyah Purwokerto showcasing their research projects on linguistics and literature.


With the objective of letting the students shine through, the programme successfully captured the students' efforts in presenting their projects on various topics, and the audience also gets involved in an inter-dialogue session at the end of every presentation.


Some of the topics covered by students from Universitas Muhammadiyah Purwokerto include “The Effectiveness of Duolingo vs. Memrise Application on Improving Non-English Major Vocabulary,” “Ethnolinguistics in Indonesia,” “The Way Taylor Swift Constructs Her Break Up Song: ‘I Knew You Were Trouble’ and Love Song ‘King of My Heart’ Through the Transitivity System,” and others.


Other than that, some of the topics covered by BENL final-year-project (FYP) students include “The Usage of Malay and English Proverbs among Malay-English Bilingual University Students,” “Language Use in Malaysian Elections: A Critical Discourse Analysis,” “In Search of a Hero: Using Campbell’s Monomyth and Schmidt’s Narrative Arc in Literary Criticism,” and others.

Delving deeper into each topics, it is clear that the programme not only offers a stage for students to share their research projects but also provides room for diversity by exchanging cultures and traditional norms between Malaysia and Indonesia.

One of the presenters, Fikri Hasan Riswadi said, “It is a very excellent way of exchanging ideas and interests through our research presentations as we can see students’ passion[s] [for] their research are different from one another,” when asked about the significance of the program.

The event ended with closing remarks by the advisor of ELITS, Dr. Homam Altabaa, in which he mentioned, “We always encourage our FYP students to present their research, attend seminars, and collaborate with other students from other institutions as it will broaden views and ideas while thriving for [the] betterment and students research ability.”
