GOMBAK, 4th October 2024: The Mahallah Representative Committees (MRC) 23/24 of Mahallah Maryam hosted a My Mahallah, My Second Home programme, namely “First Step Forward: Maryam Welcoming New Students 2024/2025,” at the Multi-Purpose Hall (MPH) of Mahallah Maryam from the 30th of September until the 2nd of October 2024.
The “First Step Forward (FSF)” is specially organised to congratulate new students for being a part of IIUM family and welcome them to Mahallah Maryam. The three-day programme was filled with lots of Mahallah-related slots and fun sessions.
On the 30th of September 2024, the programme started with a briefing from Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Tuan Shahrul Ariffin bin Maskuri, the Director of Office of Security Management (OSEM). He talked about IIUM laws and regulations, such as compoundable offences and reminders regarding students’ safety. Then, the programme continued with welcoming remarks from the President of Mahallah Maryam 2023/2024, the Principal of Mahallah Maryam, and the Fellows of Mahallah Maryam, as well as a short briefing regarding Mahallah Maryam from the Assistant Hostel Manager of Mahallah Maryam, Miss Siti Izwani. The programme ended with a photography session with all the attendees.

The next day, 1st of October 2024, the programme was brightened with the welcoming speech from the new President of Mahallah Maryam 2024/2025 and the presence of Br. Muhammad Nazhan, the Psychology Officer from the Counselling & Career Services Centre (CCSC), as the speaker for a sharing session on “Life and Tips as a Student.” There were many useful tips to achieve success and how to deal with mental health problems among the students. Br. Nazhan taught the new students how to book a counselling session with CCSC if they ever encounter any issues that they need help with. After the session ended, the attendees gathered for a photography session.

After the dispersal of the second-day session, the new students were divided into ten groups and each group was given a task to perform, such as Dikir Barat, choral speaking, singing, and acting. The performance task was to break the ice among the new students, and it succeeded as they discussed and practised together while getting to know one another.
On the 2nd of October 2024, the programme started with a short presentation on the past programmes that were handled by the MRC Mahallah Maryam 2023/2024 and awards that they received throughout their tenure. Then, they continued with the performances from the new students. The night concluded with the best-dressed award, a prize-giving ceremony, and a photography session.
