From Bluebird to X: Understanding the Reasons Behind Twitter's Rebranding

By Darwina Natasha

SAN FRANCISCO, 7 August 2023: Twitter had an unexpected change on 23 July when Elon Musk decided to rebrand the online platform merely as X. The social media platform's iconic bluebird is now represented as the letter "X" in both the Apple and Google app stores.

"Birds are cute, they're fun, they chirp, they make noise, they talk to one another, they fly around," said Mike Carr, founder of a branding company, NameStormers. "It's just a very approachable to me."

He also added, "X is on the other opposite end, X is sort of extreme. It's techy. It's harsher."

There is significant confusion among its 240 million users worldwide due to the distinct contrast with how people have become familiar with the brand.

The reason for the rebranding, which Musk had alluded to during the last year, has become apparent.

In a Twitter post on 5 October 2022, Musk dropped a hint about the purpose beforehand. He stated, "Buying Twitter is an accelerant to creating X, the everything app."

Musk, who bought Twitter for $44 billion last year, has stated that he aimed for X to be an "everything app" that users can use to publish social media postings, order food, and transfer money. He had been clear about his desire to transform Twitter into a "super-app" similar to WeChat in China that integrates all services.

Despite considering this would be very difficult, Elon Musk and X Corp. will attempt to make X an equivalent of WeChat. Musk mentioned during the rebranding, "In the months to come, we will add comprehensive communications and the ability to conduct your entire financial world."

Nevertheless, the rebranding of Twitter attracted a lot of attention, and people's reactions to it were varied. Some people dislike the change, but others think it could be a perfect chance to discover and accomplish further objectives for this platform.***
