GOMBAK, 4th June 2024: In preparation for the upcoming 2024/2025 semester, The Secretariat of English Language and Literature (ELITS) organised Final Year Project (FYP) Briefing: Seminar on Research Essentials on the 31st of May 2024. The seminar is dedicated to third and fourth-year Bachelor of English Language and Literature (BENL) students of the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), aiming to provide extensive information regarding FYP to the students.

The FYP briefing was led by the BENL FYP Coordinator, Dr Homam Altabaa, as the main speaker. He explained the requirements for the FYP and the procedure to have the course added to students’ schedules. He also gave suggestions and tips on how students can approach lecturers to become their supervisors.

The seminar was then moved to a peer-to-peer sharing session by two FYP students, Sister Dhiya Damia and Sister Najia Nazri. Speaking from her personal experience, Sister Dhiya emphasised the importance of doing FYPs on topics or fields students are interested in. At the same time, she advised students to be respectful and understanding of lecturers’ time and availability.

Meanwhile, Sister Najia reminded students to approach their intended supervisors at their earliest convenience, “You should remember that you are competing among yourselves to get a supervisor so you need to be as fast as you can.” She also encouraged students to create a schedule to follow and always work on things ahead of time.

Towards the end of the seminar, a Q&A session was open for students to voice their concerns and have their curiosities answered. The two-hour programme ended at 4.30 p.m. with a photography session. It is hoped that the FYP briefing has equipped students with the necessary knowledge and ample information for what to expect in the forthcoming semesters.***
