GOMBAK, 23 May 2023: The year 2023 is a momentous year in which International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) witnessed His Majesty Seri Paduka Baginda Yang di-Pertuan Agong XVI Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah Ibni Almarhum SUltan Haji Ahmad Shah Al-Musta’in Billah receiving an honorary degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Leadership in conjunction with the 40th anniversary of IIUM held at IIUM Cultural Centre.
As a gesture of respect, the Royal Band performed the national anthem, ‘Negaraku,’ to mark and celebrate the majestic arrival of the royals.
In line with an honorary degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Leadership that he achieved on that day, the speech delivered by the King contained a wealth of leadership maxims and philosophical insights. He stressed the importance of both the leader and the people in forming and propelling us towards a united nation.
He encouraged IIUM to stay true to our values in order to drive the ummah forward. In his speech, he pledged to contribute to the citizens and to the country.
Dhia Qistina Booty, an English Language and Literature student, took inspiration from the King’s speech. In her experience as the IIUM Band manager for the ceremony, she contemplated, “Adaptability is an important skill in leadership. Leaders must be ready to navigate through unpredictable and urgent situations while making necessary adjustments to ensure success.”
The King ended his speech by congratulating the graduates. He drew attention to the importance of aiming high and making use of our knowledge to reach for the stars. The ceremony was adjourned at 12:36 p.m.***
