GOMBAK, 10 September 2023: To expand the students’ horizons in writing forms and technical structures, from mastering news writing skills to crafting articles and feature stories, The BENL Chronicle (TBC) organised “The BENL Chronicle Workshop” from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. on September 10, Sunday.

The workshop was not organised specifically for TBC crews, but all students of IIUM were free to participate in the workshop.

In order for students to be able to participate without hassle, the workshop was held through an online meeting using Google Meet. More than 30 participants took the opportunity to participate in this workshop.

An alumni of IIUM who is now a journalist at New Straits Times Press (NSTP), Sr. Iylia Marsya, was invited as the speaker for this workshop. She also invited one of her colleagues, Br. Yusry Rofeman, a journalist at the Malay Mail, to assist her in this workshop.

Sr. Iylia first briefly talked about her journey in writing during her time as an IIUM student and her current career as a journalist for NSTP Berhad. After the brief introduction of her journey as a writer, she gave guidance to the participants on writing skills and things to be considered when writing articles, such as being mindful of a topic or theme when writing and knowing the audience or who will read the articles.

According to her, writers should take the reader’s perspective into consideration when writing articles to avoid being overly absorbed in personal inclinations. Writers should bear in mind that they write for others to understand and not solely for themselves; as she said, “you are not the only one to benefit from your article.”

During the workshop, participants were free to ask questions to Sr. Iylia verbally or textually. Together with her colleague, the questions were answered with clear elaborations along with more practical advice that should help writers when writing articles.

After all of the questions were answered, the workshop successfully ended with a photography session.***
