GOMBAK, 21 June 2023: The Department of English Language and Literature (DELL), in collaboration with the Secretariat of English Language and Literature (ELITS) IIUM, held a Youth Research Seminar 2.0 on June 21 2023, Wednesday, using the online platform, Microsoft Teams.
This seminar involved 12 presenters from DELL who presented their research on Linguistics and Literature topics to other students as a headstart for their final year project. Several lecturers have attended the seminar, including Dr. Homam Altabaa, the advisor of ELITS IIUM; Dr. Siti Nuraishah; Dr. Nor Elena; Dr. Adlina Hj. Ariffin; and Mr. Mazlan Mohd.
The seminar began with Dr. Tanja Jonid, the Head of the Department of DELL, with her welcoming remarks, “Since we are all students, there is no need to feel nervous as we will all benefit from your research.” She said it with the intention of calming the presenters.
The presenters involved students from final-year English undergraduate and postgraduate students, Hessa Kawthar, Awatif Hadiniy, Syazwina Zulkifli, Nadia Latifah, Nurin Farzana, Anis Afifi, Nurul Izzati, Muhamad Rafiqi, Ameerah Angelina, and Dzulaika Athirah. Additionally, two third-year students, Nik Liyana and Sarah Sofea, presented their topic on Beowulf as preparation for their final-year project.
Being the only presenter who researched the English linguistics area, Sr. Syazwina shared her anxiety as to whether her topic will interest the participants. Regardless, she hoped to see more seminars in the future that include student participation in the linguistics topics because there would be more to learn.
Moderated by Sr. Haifa Farzana, all the presenters were given 15 minutes to share their research findings and discussions. The seminar went smooth sailing, as there were no technical issues throughout the online session. At one in the afternoon, the seminar ended successfully with a photoshoot session with the audience. ***
